Yes, it is finally released. Another anime under the title of “Naku Koro Ni”. I liked Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni since it was a great mystery anime with lots and lots of murder. That is my favorite kind! Read the rest of the review to find out if I liked the first episode and whether or not it lived up to my expectations.
I will start with a little overview of the plot. So the anime is about a dying old man on a secluded island with only three more months to live. Every year, the Ushiromiya family will gather on that island to talk about their lives and other stuff, but the thing most of them are really after is the old man’s assets. Other than that, nothing much with any significance happened. Except a legendary witch named Beatrice is often mentioned. All we know about the witch so far, is the old man believes that she actually exists and rumors say that he sold his soul to the witch for lots of gold decades ago. And just a random note, everyone in this anime says “Beatrice” in a bizarre funny ass way. Be-a-tur-ri-chi or Biatch-tur-i-che. Something like that. Yeah I am aware it has something to do with the Japanese rule of pronunciation. But its still funny as hell.
So now lets talk about my first impression of this anime. The main character seems to be nothing special so far, and in my opinion, he doesn’t really look like much of a main character. But we’ll see how that plays out. The episode sets the pace and flow of the series. A rich family with a great amount of tension between each other over money on a secluded island. There is also this one creepy weird girl.
She makes the sound “ooo ooo ooo ooo” a bunch of times throughout the episode. Enough to make you want to slap her, but her mother actually does it for you. Twice! Thank God for that…
So far the first episode has not shown much that is especially well done. The setting and how the story is presented seems cliche and over-used in this kind of mystery stories. A bunch of old boring adults fighting over large sums of money owned by a dying old man, and a young man will be in the middle of the conflict and in the end somehow puts an end to it. Not very original at all. The thing i have most hope for in the story is the supernatural aspect of it about the witch. In the end, whether the witch is real or not I think it will still have great potentials to develop many twists in the plot, which is always good when it’s done properly. The first episode reminds me of Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo. Not sure how many of you are familiar with that, it’s pretty old. The art style and animation is mediocre. Nothing special worth pointing out. Overall, the first episode did not impress me. However, I still have high hopes for it. Its too early to judge, but so far its not great. I am expecting lots murder and intriguing plot twists from this anime. But we will have to see.
Episode Rating: 7/10
We decide to do this Umineko together as experiment. Since he already barged in many aspects, here’s what I think of this episode:
- Seiyuu are terrific. Hocchan playing Maria. It’s been a while since I last heard her kid voicing, since Tsukimiya Ayu I think. Marina Inoue is also in it which is nice. And nothing from Ono Daisuke using the same tone as the one in Seto no Hanayome.
- The episode was not as murderous as I was expecting it since the Higurashi Experience. However, I do feel the heavy atmosphere in it.
- Italian! Yes, the opening was nice and the ending was okay.
- To end this up, I got a nice expectation for this series based on this first episode.
