Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Rei

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Rei is the third season the the anime Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. This time it will only have 5 OVAs. But I will only be reviewing episode 2,3, and 4. Also known as the “Dice Killing Chapter”. So in this post, I will be reviewing episode 1 of the Dice Killing Chapter, or the second episode of the series depending on what you want to call it.

I am a big fan of the last two seasons of Higurashi. I liked season 1 more than the second, but liked both. Watched it, re-watched it, love it.  So when a third season was announced, I looked forward to it with great anticipation. By the time I am writing this, I have seen up to episode 4 of it and finished the Dice Killing Chapter. As I am reviewing each episode, I will only use and provide the information given within that particular episode to avoid spoiling too much. Enough background, let’s get started.

This episode begins with Rika and the others riding their bikes down a road. Majority of their conversation in this scene have little to no significance what so ever. So Rika decides to speed up and starts a race.

But she over did it and this happened…

Yup… looks like she died. After overcoming all of her obstacles and earned the right to live on, she decides to ride down a road that spirals downward at high speed. A road where neither Rika or any incoming cars can see each other until it’s too late. Like what was she thinking?! Anyways, when she wakes up, she is lying in a bed. Surprisingly, the first person she saw when she opened her eyes was Satoshi. Realizing that she screwed up, Rika was shocked. Then the doctor came, but to Rika’s surprise again, the doctor is not Irie like it was supposed to be. Instead he is replaced by this loser.

To do a more in depth check up for Rika, the doctor took her to his clinic. The clinic is called “Takano clinic”. After talking to the doctor a little more and looking at the calendar on the wall, Rika is shocked to find out the present date is June of Showa 58. Rena was only supposed to be in Hinamizawa starting April of Showa 57. And Satoshi is supposed to disappear in June of Showa 57. But somehow in June of Showa 58 Satoshi is still here. In addition to that, Irie is not here, and Rika’s enemy Takano is not here either.

When Rika gets back to class, she takes a good look at the classroom. It turns out Maebara Keichi is not here either. So long story short, everything in this world is completely different from any of the previous ones Rika has ever been in. Some of the key characters are not here. Rika is in bad terms with Satoko. Rena’s name remains unchanged as Reina. Mion’s after school game club don’t exist. It is also decided that the dam will be built. So Rika is pretty much screwed. Serves her right if you ask me.

So after finishing this episode, I can say I enjoyed it. No action, no murder, and nothing especially exciting happened. Well maybe except this.

Kinda gave me hope for some bloody murder for a second there. But didn’t happen. With that said, the episode was still highly entertaining because of all the twists and surprises. I wouldn’t call it exciting, but it sure was interesting. Rika is now really confused, and when i finished the episode i was pretty much as confused as she is. Not sure what was going on at all. But this has always been one of the strong points of Higurashi. It confuse you and throws in plot twists here and there to make you want to keep watching. Overall an excellent episode. It so far meets my expectations. As I said before, don’t expect anything super exciting to happen in this one. But it provides all the necessary background information and sets up the series for total ownage in the future. Totally recommend this to anyone. That’s pretty much all I have to say, and here is the opening theme song of Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Rei:

Episode Rating: 8.5/10

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Blu Ray quality!

I sure hope that you guys have a setup that complements the Blu-Ray quality like a big plasma screen and/or an amazing surround sound system. To me, if you’re going to play in 720p or 1080p, you’ve got to have an awesome setup- almost theater like. If not, then you’re missing half of the experience.

We know that, that’s why I intend to buy a new monitor… But the audio sound system, I got no idea how I will plug that with my laptop lol

If your laptop doesn’t have those multiple outputs (usually the three green, yellow, and black) for 5.1, then you can have one by using an external audio sound card via USB. After that, hook up it to a 5.1 PC stereo system, then voila, an awesome stereo system. If you know where to shop, you can probably get the whole set for about $60 without compromising the quality. Although, there are a bunch of wires and clutter to organize, and you can’t watch while having the laptop on your lap.

Of course, if viable, a simple HDMI is the cleanest and easiest way. “LAWL”
